A Rust & Latte-Toned Christmas Barberstown Castle Wedding

A Rust & Latte-Toned Christmas Barberstown Castle Wedding

A Christmas wedding in a castle, is their anything more dreamy? Our Belfast-based real wedding couple Gráinne and Kieran put a seriously chic spin on their festive celebration with their green, rust and latte colour palette. Their big day was a fairytale come to life as they celebrated with 140 of their loved ones at the magical Barberstown Castle in Co. Kildare.

With princess glam bridal style and bridesmaids in luxurious green velvet, boho-flow blooms, a reception in the medieval banquet and a very dapper four-legged VIP, you aren’t going to want to miss a single second of this enchanting winter wedding. Are you ready to check out the beautiful imagery from Laura Parkinson? Of course you are!

It was a modern-day romance for Gráinne from Derry and Kieran from Thurles as they met online. Gráinne fills us in, “We met on Tinder! I knew from the first date that he was someone special. We got on easily and it all just went from there.”

The proposal was perfect, Gráinne says and their pets played a sweet role. “We were at home putting up the Christmas tree. When finished, Kieran gave me ‘an early Christmas present’; two new Christmas tree baubles which had drawings of our cat and dog on them saying they ‘hoped I would say yes’. When I looked up, he was down on one knee with the ring… The dog was present also and was very excited with it all!”

For Gráinne and Kieran it was so important to get the atmosphere right on their big day, they wanted a laid-back celebration that was cosy and fun. They dreamed of a rustic winter aesthetic and they chose one of Ireland’s most magical venues to celebrate their union, Barberstown Castle.

Kieran and his groomsmen looked as dashing as could be in elegant black tuxedos with the groom opting for a velvet blazer, a crisp white shirt, a black velvet bow tie, black shoes and a timeless watch that was Gráinne’s wedding gift. Gráinne’s wedding day look was the stuff of bridal fairytales.

She was breathtaking in the mermaid Luciana gown by Milla Nova which is crafted from luxurious ivory mikado and features an off the shoulder neckline lined with 3D floral embroidery and a detachable princess train. Her accessories included River Island heels and a necklace that was a gift from Kieran on their wedding morning. She opted for a soft glamour beauty look while wearing her hair in picture-perfect loose curls by Stylicious.

“I am not someone who likes things to be overly manicured. As our wedding was at Christmas, I was keen to stay away from the traditional red and green festive colour scheme,” Gráinne reflects. Working with their wedding stylist they devised a stunning palette of green, rust and latte hues. The stationery from Keady Row was modern, minimalist and vibrant.

The flowers had a bohemian, non-structured vibe. Reminiscing about the wedding day, Gráinne shares, “I found the morning getting ready to be so special. It was laid-back, full of laughter and the kids all joined in. Seeing all the familiar faces of my closest friends and family when walking up the aisle was something I’ll never forget.”

The couple’s nieces and nephews played a big role. Sweetly, the artwork on the invites were drawings of them by their nieces and nephews, aged from four to 19! “Caelainn, my oldest niece did a reading. Cáit and Eve sang, Grace was a bridesmaid, Iona was flower girl and Rónán, Kian and Darragh were our page boys. It made our ceremony personal to us.”

Their celebrant was family too and, “this really shone through in his ceremony. He made us feel at ease from the get go.” Tracy Gallagher provided the stunning soundtrack to their ceremony and her rendition of Only You by Yazoo was a true highlight for the couple. Another memorable moment came as their friend Shauna sang O Holy Night.

A coffee van can instantly get the good times flowing after a wedding ceremony and that was exactly the sweet surprise the couple had planned for their guests after they exchanged vows.

The couple said “I do” to the historic castle venue in Kildare because of its character and the friendly and helpful staff. Location was another huge factor, “We had people coming from overseas so the proximity to Dublin Airport was handy. We wanted to have a three-day event with a quiet meal the night before the wedding for family and wedding party as well as a Day Two party. Barberstown were able to cater for all of this perfectly.”

They were joined by a very distinguished gentleman on their big day, their labradoodle Gus who was also kitted out in a tux!

Green bridesmaids dresses look sensational all year round and her ladies wore deep moss velvet gowns from Folkster that had asymmetrical necklines with bow straps.

As for wedding planning advice, Grainne says, “Its cliché but remember this is about the two of you. Concentrate on things which will make your day special to you; readings, music, timeline etc. Hire vendors who you have rapport with, especially your photographer. They’re a huge part of your day and we were so lucky to have the dream team!”

“Laura, our photographer was amazing, it was like hanging out with your friend all day. She was so warm and her photos reflected how comfortable we were with her. Enlist the help of MartinaO. She is honestly amazing at her job, the best in the business!”

Their reception in the historic medieval banquet room was loaded with texture, colour and plenty of sparkle. White flower and foliage displays, green velvet tablecloths, orange table signage and menus and cream taper candles in minimalist brass candles made up the tablescape styling.

From brides searching for their dream wedding dress, Gráinne has the following advice, “Think about a dress that won’t hurt or impede you. I had a big dress but it was comfortable and I was able to remove the overskirt for the reception.”

The Mixtape were on hand to get the party seriously started after dinner. Instead of hiring a DJ, the couple’s friend Jonathan made a video disco. “He worked tirelessly in the run up, asking us about favourite songs, songs we like to dance to etc and the playlist couldn’t have been more personal and special. He included lots of photos and videos from our lives to go with it so the revellers on the dancefloor had something to watch as well as boogey too.”

Wow! This two-tone beauty proves how one-tier wedding cakes can be small in scale but huge on style.

The couple enjoyed a mini-moon in Copenhagen immediately after the wedding. They celebrated their first Christmas as a married couple at home before they jetted to New Zealand for their honeymoon in January. It was a real adventure as they soaked up the stunning scenery of the South Island by campervan. They made a pit-stop in Sydney to visit family on the way home too.

A very special thank you to Gráinne, Kieran and Laura Parkinson Photography for sharing this incredible wedding with One Fab Day! You can see more dreamy imagery in the gallery below.
