A Vibrantly Exotic Caribbean Wedding: Joane & Karl

This real wedding has to come with a disclaimer. The style is sensational! Joane and Karl tied the knot in a sun-kissed spring wedding in the Caribbean that was full of colour and saturated in love. The couple are both from Guadeloupe and they drew on the beauty of nature at their serene, and stunning, venue Habitation du Comté.

With a mesmerising backdrop of lush countryside, rugged mountains and sparkling sea enchanting their 170 guests, the couple let the exotic surrounds of their wedding venue do the talking. You’ll want to book a holiday after seeing the palm and mango tree-dotted grounds! Smile and Shine Photography captured all the day’s magical events, so let’s get started!

So, how did Joane and Karl meet, you ask? Joane explains, “It was during an after work event in May 2016. Karl made the first move by asking me for my number, I refused since at that time I was not ready to hang out. He found me on Facebook, we talked but nothing more. Then we saw each other again at the end of June by chance at an art opening. He gave me a bold compliment on my makeup and I finally agreed to give him my number and we haven’t been apart since.”

As for the proposal, Karl popped the question during a romantic weekend away at a hotel. “I felt the request was coming so I was on alert. The first evening we had dinner in a very chic restaurant. I thought it was the key moment even if I was a little apprehensive since I didn’t like the idea of a public request. Dinner passed, then nothing. We returned to the hotel, and when we arrived in the room it was completely decorated, with balloons, rose petals and lots of flowers. He had decorated the room during our absence at the restaurant. And that clearly I wasn’t expecting since he’s not the most romantic. The whole hotel heard me scream.”

Joane was utterly dazzling as her bridal wardrobe married texture beautifully. She wore a custom fit and flare gown with glitter embroidery and an asymmetrical bodice. From her white beaded crown to her crystal drop earrings right down to her bowed Aquazzura heels, she sparkled with every step.

Okay, so we may be a bit biased but we love green bridesmaids dresses. How phenomenal did her ladies look in their mix and match gowns?

Can we take moment for the superbly stylish groom? We’ll forever adore the pink groomswear trend which Karl absolutely aced and he complemented his blush three-piece suit with maroon accessories. It was such a romantic look.

Joane made her entrance in spine-tingling style to Can’t Help Falling in Love by Elvis Presley with her brother and law and father in law performing the song on saxophone and piano. “It was really special. And I chose to be accompanied by my mother. For the town hall my father did it but for the ceremony it was a mother-daughter moment.”

When it came to their wedding day priorities, Joane and Karl were all about their guests! Karl highlights, “Our families and friends are as festive and crazy as we are so we really made this day about celebrating. We laughed, we cried, we celebrated. And I even got to do a freestyle with a group.”

The couple fell in love with the venue for its gorgeous grounds and the fact it was exclusive use. “We knew it was ‘the one’ because there was the possibility of privitising the entire hotel, which allowed our close friends and families to sleep on site. There was a villa adjoining the hotel for us and the gardens were large enough to accommodate our various wedding stages without having to move.”

As for their wedding day aesthetic, they wanted to work with the naturally gorgeous surroundings. “We are lucky enough to live in the Caribbean. So nature is already very beautiful there. We stayed on this beautiful garden base, just having to add one or two flowers here and there.”

They have sage wedding planning advice for engaged couples. “Make a budget and count an extra 10%. Prioritising expenses, making compromises and trying not to worry too much isn’t worth it.”

Their one-tier wedding cake was humble in size but huge on style and colourful flowers were the cherry on top.

Joane dazzled her guests as she changed into a bridal jumpsuit with a lace bodice and a dramatic drape detail. So chic!

The couple stayed at the boutique luxury resort Tamarind Hills in Antigua for their honeymoon. “We recommend it 100 times! The place is magical.”
